Hypoallergy

Hypoallergy is a term used to describe a reduced allergic reaction to a particular irritant. In contrast, an allergy is an exaggerated immune system response to harmless substances called allergens. A person with hypoallergy has a lower likelihood of developing an allergic reaction to a specific irritant.

There are many different types of allergies, including food allergies, respiratory allergies, and skin allergies. Hypoallergy can occur with any of these types. Examples of hypoallergy include:

  • Food allergies: A person with hypoallergy to dairy products can consume small amounts of milk or dairy without symptoms.

  • Respiratory allergies: A person with hypoallergy to house dust mites can live in an environment with dust mites without developing symptoms.

  • Skin allergies: A person with hypoallergy to nickel can wear small amounts of nickel in jewelry or other items without developing an allergic reaction.

The causes of hypoallergy are not fully understood, but it is believed to be genetic or result from prior exposure to the allergen. Some therapies, such as immunotherapy (desensitization), can also help develop hypoallergy.

It is important to note that hypoallergy is not the same as intolerance. Intolerance refers to undesirable but usually harmless reactions to certain foods, while an allergy is an exaggerated immune response that can sometimes be life-threatening.
